But Here’s the Problem: We Don’t Own the Stack

Despite this explosion:

• Platforms are owned elsewhere

• Distribution is controlled elsewhere

Yes, royalties are growing. Nigerian artists earned tens of billions of naira recently (approx. N60 Billion from Spotify), driven largely by global demand.

But zoom out:

We are exporting culture…
and importing the systems that monetise it.

That is not scale.

That is dependency.

What Spotify (Quietly) Reveals About the Future

I recently spent time at Spotify’s London headquarters in a series of high-level conversations.

One insight stood out.

There has long been a belief that data costs are the biggest barrier to streaming in markets like Nigeria.

That assumption is wrong.

“Data cost is not the constraint people think it is.”

Not to let telcos off the hook—but we have to be honest:

We no longer have an excuse.

Consumption is happening.

Adoption is happening.

The audience is already here.

So if value is not being fully captured locally, the issue is not access.

It is architecture.

The Stack Has Already Been Rewritten

For years, we thought the hierarchy looked like this:

Artist → Label → DSP (Spotify/Apple) → Listener

That model is dead.

Today, the real flow looks like this:

TikTok → Culture → Spotify / Apple / YouTube → Revenue

Discovery has moved upstream.

And it has moved out of streaming platforms entirely.

Spotify is now a library.

Spotify’s own ecosystem reflects this—many breakout Nigerian artists are first discovered on TikTok before they ever chart on streaming platforms.

Which means:

Streaming platforms no longer create demand.
They capture it.

The Creative Stack: Where the Real Opportunity Lives

This is where we need to be precise.

Because the goal is not to replace Spotify.
Or compete with YouTube.

That’s a distraction.

The opportunity is to own the layers they don’t control.

The Creative Stack, Simplified:

Where ideas become IP (artists, producers, creators)

Africa Already Owns the Most Important Layer

Let’s be clear:

We are not trying to “enter” the global system.

We are already shaping it.

Over 250 million playlists globally now feature Nigerian artists.

That is not participation.

That is leverage.

The Strategic Shift: Orchestrate, Don’t Replace

The instinct is to say:

“Let’s build our own Spotify.”

Wrong move.

The smarter play:

• Use TikTok for ignition

• Use Spotify for scale

• Use Apple Music for monetisation

• Use YouTube for depth and longevity

But build:

• Direct audience ownership

• Data infrastructure

• IP control mechanisms

• New financial layers (tokenisation, fractional ownership, licensing rails)

This is what the Creative Stack enables.

From Streaming Economy → Ownership Economy

Streaming is a rental model.

You get paid per use.

But ownership?

Ownership compounds.

The next phase of the creative economy will not be defined by:

• who gets the most streams

The Moment That Made Me Think

A while back I came across an exchange that stuck with me.

Cosmos Maduka, a highly respected Nigerian industrialist, publicly criticised the culture of displaying wealth on social media.

The comment triggered a response from nightlife entrepreneur Cubana Chief Priest, who felt the critique was directed at him.

His response was blunt.

Some people, he argued, simply don’t understand the new game.

In today’s world, attention is currency — and smart business people adapt.

That statement stayed with me.

Because he isn’t entirely wrong.

The Monetisation of Visibility

Attention today is no longer just influence.

It’s monetisable.

We now know where billionaires vacation.
What watches they wear.
What private jets they fly in.

In some cases, the spectacle of wealth itself becomes part of the business model.

Value is being priced publicly, socially, performatively.

But the underlying dynamic isn’t actually new.

The Mona Lisa Effect

Before 1911, the Mona Lisa was simply one of many paintings by Leonardo da Vinci.

Then it was stolen.

For two years newspapers around the world ran stories about the missing masterpiece. When the painting was finally recovered, it had become the most famous artwork on Earth.

Not because the painting changed.

But because attention changed its perceived value.

Psychologists call this the mere exposure effect.

The more we see something, the more important it appears.

Attention creates familiarity.
Familiarity creates value.

Where the Equation Changes

This dynamic works beautifully for brands, products, and symbols.

With humans, I’m less certain.

An influencer friend once said something revealing to me:

“People think they know me… but they don’t.”

And the gap between perception and reality is only widening.

AI is making synthetic identity, synthetic presence, and synthetic status easier to manufacture.

Soon it may become almost impossible to distinguish what is real from what is curated.

The Real Question

So yes, attention is currency.

That debate is already settled.

The real question isn’t whether attention monetises.

It clearly does.

The real question is what prolonged exposure to this system does to us.

What happens when everything becomes performance?

When value becomes indistinguishable from visibility?

When the Cycle Turns

Cultural systems tend to move in cycles.

If attention becomes too artificial, too engineered, too performative, something else will become scarce.

Authenticity.

And scarcity is where value lives.

Which raises an interesting possibility.

One day the real arbitrage may not be who captures the most attention, but who can prove they are genuine.

When that shift happens, and it probably will, the question will be simple.

Was your value built on hype?

Or something more durable?

Just something I’ve been thinking about.

What It Might Mean for Africa

Here’s a question worth asking right now:

Does AI level the playing field — or tilt it even further?

A lot of the public conversation assumes the former. That artificial intelligence will democratize opportunity. That it will make expertise cheaper, skills more accessible, and productivity available to everyone.

But early evidence suggests something quite different.

AI may not be an equalizer at all.

It may be an amplifier.

The Speed of Change

The pace of change we’re living through is staggering.

That’s become something of a cliché — but it’s an earned one.

Just 18 months ago, my team delivered a piece of software to a client. It took real effort, real time, and real cost.

Today, the same task can be done faster, cheaper, and with astonishing efficiency.

In fact, the process has become so streamlined that even I found myself suspicious the first time I saw it.

Across IT — and increasingly across many industries — margins are collapsing, traditional models are shifting, and the way we define expertise is changing.

Which is why a recent question caught my attention:

Does AI narrow the gap between high performers and everyone else — or widen it?

The Amplifier Effect

The research points strongly in one direction.

AI appears to amplify existing advantages.

People who already possess skills, creativity, and resources become dramatically more productive.

Those with fewer capabilities gain less.

In other words, the technology multiplies what already exists.

There’s a line in the Bible that captures this dynamic perfectly:

“To those who have, more will be given. From those who have little, even that little will be taken away.”

Technological change has often worked this way.

And once you start looking through that lens, patterns begin to emerge.

When Access Changes the Game

Take sports.

For decades, the composition of elite basketball teams looked remarkably similar.

Not necessarily because talent was distributed differently — but because access was.

When access expands, the talent pool expands.

And the shape of excellence changes.

Media tells a similar story.

Before the internet solved distribution, global cultural exports were dominated by the United States and the UK.

Shows like The Cosby Show or Fawlty Towers shaped global entertainment and cultural norms.

But once the internet opened distribution, something interesting happened.

The first YouTube video to reach a billion views wasn’t American or British.

It was Korean.

Psy’s Gangnam Style.

Access changed the equation.

Now Apply That Lens to Africa

Africa has the youngest population in the world.

A generation raised in environments where improvisation, creativity, and problem-solving are daily survival skills.

Among them are millions of naturally gifted individuals.

Historically, many of the most talented left — drawn by opportunity abroad.

But that dynamic may also be shifting.

Restrictive immigration policies are raising the barriers to leaving. For example, certain US work visas now carry costs approaching six figures for sponsoring companies.

Which means more talent may stay.

Now imagine what happens when millions of young Africans — already conditioned to be inventive — gain access to tools that dramatically amplify capability.

AI doesn’t replace ingenuity.

It multiplies it.

The Possibility of Geometric Growth

If that amplification effect plays out at scale, the implications are profound.

Africa has long exported raw materials.

But AI could enable the continent to export something far more powerful:

Creativity.
Culture.
Innovation.

At scale.

Aliko Dangote once spoke about the importance of not “importing poverty or exporting jobs.”

In the AI era, there may be a third possibility.

Exporting ingenuity.

The Familiar Skepticism

Of course, we’ve heard optimistic narratives before.

“Africa Rising” has appeared in headlines many times over the past two decades.

So skepticism is healthy.

But technological shifts tend to reset competitive landscapes.

And when the underlying infrastructure of capability changes, new actors often emerge.

If AI truly acts as an amplifier, then regions with large pools of untapped talent may experience the most dramatic gains.

The Real Question

Which brings us back to the original question.

Is AI an equalizer?

Or an amplifier?

The early evidence suggests the latter.

Which means the real question for Africa isn’t whether AI will arrive.

It already has.

The real question is this:

Will we ride the amplifier — or be drowned out by it?

We are living in interesting times.

Long may they be.

Even expert gemologists often need specialized equipment to tell the difference.

And yet most people will still say they prefer the “natural” one.

Why?

The Greatest Marketing Campaign in History

Most marketers know the story of how diamonds became “forever.”

Before the early 1900s, diamonds were just another gemstone. In fact, they were often considered less desirable than rubies, sapphires, or emeralds.

Then came De Beers.

Through one campaign - “A Diamond is Forever”, they didn’t just sell a gem. They sold a social idea.

A diamond became proof of love.
A ritual of commitment.
A symbol embedded in culture.

The brilliance of the campaign was that it redefined value. Not based on utility or even rarity alone, but on meaning.

And once society agreed on that meaning, the value followed.

When Science Catches Up

Fast-forward to today.

Science has caught up with geology.

We can now grow diamonds in laboratories that are indistinguishable from natural ones in composition, structure, and beauty.

On paper, the case should be simple.

Lab diamonds are cheaper.
More sustainable.
Technically identical.

And yet, many people still prefer the natural stone.

Because what they are buying isn’t just a mineral.

They’re buying the story of time, rarity, and tradition.

In other words, they’re buying socially constructed value.

Enter AI

Now we’re approaching a similar moment with creativity.

Tools like Seedance and other generative models can already produce films, art, and images that rival human work.

Soon the difference will become almost impossible to detect.

Which raises an interesting question:

When everything looks perfect, what will we still consider valuable?

History suggests the answer.

Not output. Meaning.

The Role of Brands

Brands have always been the architects of meaning.

They shape what society believes is worth paying for.

Which means they have an enormous role to play in the age of AI.

Just as De Beers once convinced the world that love should come with a diamond, brands today can reinforce the idea that human creativity still matters.

That craft matters.
That authorship matters.
That the human hand behind something gives it value.

Some brands have been quietly defending this idea for decades.

The Hermès Lesson

Take Hermès.

Every Hermès bag is handmade by a single artisan in France.

Technically speaking, machines could replicate that level of precision today.

But Hermès doesn’t automate the process.

Because Hermès isn’t really selling a bag.

They’re selling meaning.

The story of craft.
Of patience.
Of human mastery.

And meaning cannot be mass-produced.

The Real Question

AI will undoubtedly make creation faster, cheaper, and more abundant.

In many cases, it will produce work that is technically flawless.

But perfection has never been what moves us.

Emotion does.
Story does.

The sense that another human, flawed, curious, gifted, left their mark on something.

That’s what makes it matter.

The Next Value System

Value has always been a social construct.

From diamonds to luxury fashion to digital art, society collectively decides what is precious.

Which means the next frontier may not belong to those who build the smartest AI.

It may belong to those who build the strongest meaning around it.

As we stand at this inflection point, the real question isn’t whether AI will replace human creativity.

The real question is this:

Will we still value the very things that make us human enough to keep creating?

For a long time we’ve treated intelligence and creativity as if they were the same thing.

They are not.

In fact, confusing the two may be one of the reasons many societies, and many institutions, struggle to solve their hardest problems.

Intelligence and creativity serve very different purposes.

Intelligence is about knowing, analysing, organising, and understanding.
Creativity is about daring to do something new with that knowledge.

One explains the world.
The other reshapes it.

Both require thinking - the disciplined kind.

My favourite chemistry teacher used to shout “THINK!” in every class. At the time it felt dramatic. But he was right.

Meaningful work, whether academic or creative, begins with thinking deeply. Studying. Observing. Processing. Evaluating.

A PhD is one visible receipt for that kind of thinking. But it is not the only one.

Where intelligence and creativity diverge is purpose.

Intellectual work seeks understanding, proof, correctness.
Creative work seeks difference, possibility, courage.

Creativity requires judgement, the ability to decide, to take a stance, to risk being wrong, to build something that didn’t exist before.

Intelligence can tell you what is.
Creativity dares to shape what could be.

Sometimes problems can’t simply be reasoned away.

Some require an entirely different plane of thinking.

Think David versus Goliath.

If David had only analysed the data, reviewed case studies, and benchmarked historical outcomes, he would likely have concluded the fight was unwinnable.

But a creative strategy, drawing from unlikely data sources, changed the equation.

Universities are extraordinary hubs for brainpower.

But creativity tends to thrive in different environments, places that invite risk, experimentation, failure, courage, taste, and intuition.

Spaces where bold thinking is not merely studied, but practiced.

Africa needs both.

Deep thinkers and bold creators.

But historically, we have leaned far more heavily on one.

Our challenges — the Goliaths we face — demand more Davids. More disciplined creative thinkers with the courage to execute daring ideas.

So maybe the real question is this:

Why do we default to intellectuals for leadership when so many of the problems ahead require imagination as much as intelligence?

Maybe it’s time we trusted more builders, makers, dreamers, and doers with the steering wheel.

Because intelligence helps us understand the world.

Creativity helps us change it.

I’ve been thinking a lot about creativity lately.

Not the kind we romanticise, genius, inspiration, lightning bolts from nowhere, but the quieter kind. The kind that shows up in small decisions that change everything.

Oddly enough, the first time I really understood this had nothing to do with business, technology, or innovation.

It had to do with stew.

When I turned 18 and left for university, I knew there was one life skill I absolutely had to learn: how to cook a proper Nigerian stew. My cousin took on the responsibility of teaching me. She showed me the process carefully, step by step. The ingredients, the timing, the rhythm of it.

When I got to school, I followed everything I had learned. Fresh ingredients. The same steps. I even experimented a little, adding a few tweaks of my own in the hope of perfecting the recipe.

The result?

It was fine.

But it wasn’t hers.

In Nigerian terms, the soup just wasn’t “sweet.”

When I came home during the holidays, I told her about the problem. She laughed and asked me to cook while she watched.

So I did exactly what I had been doing at school, blended the peppers, chopped the onions, fried the base, added the meat, stirred with confidence. She nodded along as I worked.

Then, right at the end, she asked a simple question:

“So… when are you going to add the salt?”

Salt?

I added it.

And instantly everything changed.

The stew transformed. The flavors came alive. Suddenly it tasted exactly the way it was supposed to. Even she had to hail me.

This story isn’t really about cooking.

It’s about creativity.

Because creativity often works like salt.

Small. Invisible. Easy to overlook. But without it, everything falls flat.

Culture gives us the why.
Technology gives us the what.

Creativity is the how.

It’s the thing that takes the same ingredients everyone else has and produces something different. Something valuable. Something people actually want.

And importantly, creativity rarely shows up as a grand invention. More often it appears as a shift:

A different business model.
A new way to reach the market.
A product no one thought to build.

In today’s hyper-competitive world, unlocking value at scale usually requires one or more of three things:

• A new business model
• A new go-to-market approach
• A genuinely new product

But unlocking value is only half the story.

The harder part, the part many people miss, is capturing the value once it’s unlocked.

This is where things get interesting.

Sometimes we do something creative, something that clearly generates value, and we settle too quickly. A seemingly attractive fee, a short-term deal, a quick win. It feels rewarding in the moment, but later we realise the bigger value flowed elsewhere.

Other times the mistake is even simpler.

We don’t even realize the value we’ve created in the first place.

One is impatience.
The other is ignorance.

But the outcome is often the same.

We walk away from the table too early.

And the strange thing is this: both mistakes usually happen because we misunderstand creativity itself. We treat creativity as the end of the process—when in reality it is only the beginning.

Creativity unlocks value.

Innovation is what happens when you capture it.

Which means the real discipline isn’t just generating ideas. It’s understanding the systems; business, markets, incentives that allow those ideas to compound.

Looking back, that stew taught me something simple but important.

The difference between something that is merely good and something that is truly valuable can come down to one small ingredient.

In cooking, it’s salt.

In business, it’s creativity.

And in both cases, the trick is not just adding it.

It’s recognizing its worth.

Culture? It is…

Something nice to have.
Something expressive.
Something emotional.
